Consider that this past December, the video conferencing service Zoom had 10 million daily users. In March, that number reached million. Given the Zoom boom—and that millions of people will be working remotely for the foreseeable future—you better know how to use Zoom for business meetings, and use it well. So here are a few ways to quickly improve the quality of your Zoom meetings. This means you need to find a quiet space.

Ideally, you want to set up in a bedroom, office, or other room no one else in your household will be using or able to walk through while you Zoom. You can do this by taking up a corner of a room, or sitting with your back close to a wall.

Ideally, you want something clean and clear, preferably a white wall, behind you. Although you might be tempted to upload a personal photo and use that as your background which can be done in Zoom , please resist this temptation. Just as important as your background is the position of your computer or laptop.

Many new Zoom users sit at a desk and put the laptop right on top of it. So when you Zoom, give your computer some lift with heavy books hardcover cookbooks or art books work well or some other hard, substantial material like short planks of wood. Ideally, you want your face to be the main object of focus.

You want people to be able to look into your eyes and see your facial expressions. These visual cues will better mimic in-person conversations, making for better meetings.

This is tricky and can take some time to get right, so be patient. Keep in mind that too much overhead light will make your face too bright, and too much background light will make your face too dark. A trick here is to get a lamp and position it just behind and to the side of your computer. This will light your face without having to rely on a ton of overhead or background light.

You might even feel hesitant to use Zoom for work meetings, wanting to stay in your comfort zone and keep using the phone, email, and Slack. However, if you give Zoom a try, you’ll likely find that there are many benefits to Zoom—and even come to prefer Zooming over your old ways of communicating. Also, it’s important to remember that now is not a normal time.

And so, don’t be hard on yourself if you’re Zooming and your son runs through the room and is visible on camera, or your neighbor’s car alarm goes off and won’t stop, or your internet connection is so slow that your face freezes. In the time of a global pandemic, doing your best is all that you can do, all anyone can ask of you. People you Zoom with will certainly understand any minor technical difficulties you might experience.

How to look at the camera on zoom

You should also have the camera at eye level. When your laptop is on the desk the camera is usually looking up at you. You should always raise your laptop camera to match your eye level so you are looking straight into the camera.

Be aware of headroom. Once you have the eye line right, make sure you have the right amount of headroom. Headroom is the amount of space between the top of your head and the top of the screen. That is about the right amount of headroom you should have. Place your computer so that the camera is seeing you from your chest up. Be aware of the space behind you. Make sure the area behind you is interesting but not cluttered.

Always be aware of your surrounding because what ever is around you will be seen in your meeting. Do not have your back close to the wall behind you. Give yourself some distance behind you so that there is depth to your image.

A good distance, if possible, is around three to four feet from the wall behind you. Be aware of your light source. Never set your computer up where there is a bright light source behind you. It might seem like a good idea to arrange yourself in front of a window so that your beautiful backyard is highlighted behind you – but unless you have a lot of light on your face coming from behind your computer to counter the light from the window you will end up being a black blob in front of a bright light.

Use the horizontal mode on your phone. There is one, and only one, acceptable camera angle: head-on and at eye level. Your table is almost certainly going to be lower than your face, and that means people are going to get an unflattering look up at you.

Use a set of books, a stool, or a higher table to make sure your camera is at the same level as your eyes. You want to show up to your meeting already looking good — not adjusting your surroundings, screen brightness, angle, or hair live for everyone to see. Zoom, Webex, and other video meeting apps have an option for showing you a preview of your video before the call starts.

If you select this option, a video preview will pop up before you enter a call so you can check how everything looks.

Once the call starts, I recommend hiding your own video from yourself. Not only will you be less prone to fix your hair or move the angle during the call, you will also be less distracting to yourself and others. Also keep in mind that your headphones might have a better mic than your computer.

Most videoconferencing apps have a tool in their settings for testing your mic, and I recommend collecting all the mics in your house headphones often have one built in and testing them out to find the one that sounds clearest.

As a courtesy to others, please keep your mic muted unless you are talking. In Zoom, I use the feature that lets you unmute yourself while holding down the space bar. Start with a comfortable place to sit or stand for a long period of time. Although I like to sit on my bed, I found that sitting crossed-leg for more than 20 minutes is not comfortable for me, so I moved my video call setup to my standing desk.

If you are using a laptop, have a charger plugged in and ready for when your battery gets low. I also like to bring a water bottle and cup of coffee to my meetings.
