Recently, there have been reports regarding almost every company listening to your conversations. These are the conversations that you make on your virtual assistants such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa or Apple’s Siri and now it’s Microsoft Skype. To this point, we have seen that each and everyone is guilty of listening to your conversations. The argument from companies is that they want to improve speech recognition by listening to user’s conversations.
While this makes sense, it is also a privacy concern for many. We should also note that these conversations are not listened to by company employees but by contractors they have hired. Now, a new report reveals that Microsoft contractors listen to your Skype calls too. It is also said that these contractors analyze Skype calls where intimate things are discussed. Microsoft confirmed prior to this that they do listen to Cortana for speech recognition and improvement purposes. However, it was never mentioned that they also listen to Skype calls from their users.
Whistleblower exposed Microsoft Skype
A whistleblower who wanted to reveal the information said that apart from Cortana, Skype calls are also intercepted by Microsoft. On reaching out to Microsoft regarding this report, they said that permission is being taken from their users for “collecting and using voice data”. Microsoft spokesperson said that “We strive to be transparent about our collection and use of voice data to ensure customers can make informed choices about when and how their voice data is used,”

Since this report was published thanks to a whistleblower, people have come to realize that even their Skype calls are not private. This suggests that people who are adamant about their privacy will do fewer personal talks during Skype sessions. Because the whistleblower says that some of these Skype calls do reveal full addresses, bank details, and other personal information of a particular user.
