FrontPage templates act as a basic design for your web page. Templates contain pre-designed page elements, such as tables, fonts, images, and color, to make a group of related documentation consistent and well organized for the reader.

With templates, you can make it easy for a large group of writers to work consistently with one page design. This document will introduce the varieties of FrontPage templates and show how to create and use them. FrontPage templates can be accessed through the New task pane. The Frames Pages tab offers a variety of templates with automatic frames styles. The Style Sheets tab offers pages with automatic font styles and color.

The General tab offers templates that are most commonly used for non-frames pages. When a FrontPage template is selected, a preview appears in the Preview box.

If you do not wish to use any of the templates given, you can create your own. After creating your own template, it is saved with the other My Templates in the New task pane.

If you are working with a group of writers and need to save a file into a location other than the FrontPage templates, low tech templates are recommended. Low tech templates are web pages that are created with appropriate design elements but then are saved as a regular web page.

Once this web page is saved, the writer must mark the web page as Read-only. Marking the web page Read-only will prohibit changes made directly to the elements of that template. You have two options when creating your own templates with FrontPage. You can create a FrontPage template, which will be accessible through the New task pane, or you can create a Low Tech template marked as read-only and save it to the location you find most appropriate.

Creating a FrontPage template is no different than opening a new web page and adding appropriate page elements. It is only the saving operation that is different.

Once you create a page, you will need to save it as a template and give it a name and location. From the File menu, select New The New task pane appears. Under New page , click More Page Templates The Page Templates dialog box appears.

Click Save. The Save As Template dialog box appears. In the Title text box, type a title for your template. In the Name text box, type a name for your template. NOTE: The name of the template also corresponds to the folder name. In the Description text box, type a description for your template. Creating low tech templates is very similar to creating a FrontPage template.

However, with the low tech template, you save the web page as a normal web page and then mark it as a Read-only web page. In order to make your template low tech, you must select the Read-only option from Windows Explorer. From the File menu, select New. Adjust the page title. Windows Explorer opens. From the File menu, select Properties The Properties dialog box appears. In the General tab, from Attributes , select Read-only. Using general templates is similar to any web page in FrontPage.

After you have chosen a template, a copy of it opens and is ready to use. FrontPage templates allow you to make design element changes, such as changing the image, fonts, tables, etc.
